Bitcoin has made millionaires nearly overnight, lost some their life savings, and fluctuates more than a politician during election season, but make no mistake: it's not currency, at least to this Florida court. A Miami-Dade judge ruled in favor of a man, Michell Espinoza, charged with illegally selling and laundering $1,500 worth of bitcoin to undercover detectives. Before the transaction, Espinoza was informed by the detectives that they intended to use the bitcoin to purchase stolen credit cards, a move that could constitute money laundering — by Florida's definition of the law.
